Manufacturing & Engineering
With a deep and rich history of technological innovation permeating the North East, it’s no surprise that it is home to some of the largest and most recognisable engineering companies in the UK. Big names in the Oil and Gas, Automotive, Rail, Chemical and Aeronautical industries, amongst others, have established bases in Tyneside; with over £200m being invested into three local facilities just recently. Kelburn are proud to have been actively involved in these sectors since 1979.
Whilst law, accounting and banking automatically come to mind, the professional sector has proved difficult to clearly describe. However, in 2014 The Office of Fair Trading defined Professional Services as the tertiary sector of the economy requiring special training in the arts or sciences, bringing into scope many additional occupations including Architects, Engineers, Management Consultants and Pharmacists, and currently is estimated to employ over 45,000 people in the region. Kelburn have supported many professional practices to recruit both administrative staff and qualified professionals.
Not for Profit / Third Sector
Not for profit organisations employ around 4% of people in the North East, with much of this employment concentrated in Newcastle. Chief employers in this area include Housing Associations, charities and social enterprises, with one significant success story coming from the Sunderland based North East Business and Innovation Centre (BIC), which has helped to create over 7000 jobs since opening its doors. With a diverse range of opportunities in this sector, Kelburn has worked in partnership with organisations on a number of different appointments.
Warehouse & Distribution
Recent years have seen huge growth in online retailing and as a result of this, demand has grown for warehouse and distribution space – it’s estimated the retail sector now accounts for around 60% of the warehousing occupancy in the UK.
In particular, the North East has seen a significant take up of logistics and distribution space, with large retailers and supply chain companies acquiring premises across the region. Nissan dominates in Sunderland, Vantec in Washington, and supermarket giants Asda, Tesco, Aldi and Lidl employ thousands across sites from Teesport to Wynyard.

Kelburn have experience of supplying staff to large EPC companies throughout the region for many years and have been involved in some high profile projects over the years. The largest public sector employers in the North East are the NHS, Education, Local Government and Central Government Offices. Despite several years of post-recession austerity measures, the public sector still accounts for 1 in 5 jobs in the North East, the third highest of the UK regions.
